About PowerSouth
PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, a generation and transmission (G&T) company provides wholesale power to 39 counties in Alabama and 10 counties in Florida. Power is distributed through 16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems. PowerSouth energy reaches more than 1 million end-users.
PowerSouth owns and operates six generation facilities and holds ownership interest in an additional facility. Energy is generated by natural gas, coal, and hydroelectric, with a combined generating capacity of more than 1,600 megawatts. PowerSouth's network of transmission assets includes more than 2,200 miles of line and nearly 300 substations.
PowerSouth was formed in 1941 by 11 cooperatives to generate and sell electricity. The company was first known as Alabama Electric Cooperative, and the name was changed in 2008 to reflect the company's extended service area.
